The Details

Tasting Note Bright straw in colour with green hues. This wine is fruit dominant with vibrant aromas of pears, figs, green pineapple and peach on a base of almond tart. With time in the glass, the aromas of butter, cheese rind, toast and flint emerge. Medium to full bodied, this Chardonnay is mineral and soft, supported by fine, fresh acidity.
Best Enjoyed With Enjoy with mushroom risotto with thyme and truffle oil; gnocchi with sage butter; or a cheese platter with seasonal fruit and drizzle of honey is also a great match.
Treatment The finer flavours produced by these clones, in combination with the use of natural ‘wild yeast’ fermentation by indigenous vineyard yeasts, produce a more complex and elegant wine with rich creamy flavour and tangy acidity. Palate structure and texture is further enhanced through extended lees contact. Around 50% of the blend was fermented and matured in new (15% of the final blend) and 1-3 year old fine grained French barriques to add weight and texture, with the balance of the wine fermented in stainless steel to retain fruit freshness and vibrancy.

It's easy to enjoy a glass
There's a softness and silky presence to this Hill-Smith Estate Chardonnay from the Eden Valley. It's a good drink for 25 bucks. A bit is going on here as it calmly moves about. I like its humility and approachability - it's easy to enjoy a glass, that's for sure. Spiced green apple, white-fleshed peaches, canned pear and old school lemonade are among the highlights. Some delicate vanilla and Nice biscuit creaminess adds further interest. Well done for this easy-drinking Chardonnay. Drink to three years.
