Wines from earthworks

Great wine starts with great soil, and great soil starts with those who know how to work it.

When a group of local families decided to bring their grapes – and over 230 years of winegrowing expertise – together, something very special was born.

The coming together of these local legends, these rugged characters and sixth generation Barossans, formed the bedrock of the earthworks collective.

Each grower raises their grapes to their own unique picture of perfection. They know it’s the little things that count. They know when to drop the tools and let the earth do its work. When it comes to sustainability, they look at the bigger picture.

The earthworks collective champions generational stewardship and a community-minded approach towards monitoring their impact every step of the way. The result is a wine that is better for us, and for the planet.

Founded by families and grown across generations, harvesting the benefits of individual wine wisdom – there’s more to this drop than meets the eye.

The Story of Earthworks

A Legacy of Barossa Families

Earthworks began in 2003 as a collaboration among generational Barossa winegrower families, united by a shared vision: flourishing vineyards passed down through generations. With unwavering passion for viticulture and a deep commitment to their Barossa community, these growers knew cooperation would pay off in spades, and so Earthworks was born. More than a label – it was a chance to bring the fruits of their labour directly to wine lovers, showcasing the essence of Barossa.

Started by the Lindner and Bitter families, the first wine was released: Earthworks Barossa Shiraz 2003. With vineyards scattered across the Barossa, each site offered a unique expression of place. This variety brought rich complexity to every bottle, melding layers of fruit flavour and structure into wines that captured the heart of the region.

Built on trust, mutual respect, and a handshake, Earthworks today represents more than 20 family vineyards throughout the Barossa. Each brings generations of expertise, with second, third, fourth, and even fifth generations tending the vines, in turn teaching their children the craft of vine training, pruning, and harvesting.

The Earthworks wines are crushed, blended and bottled by the Hill-Smith family at their winery in Angaston – another family business sharing Earthworks’ commitment to a sustainable community.

Earthworks remains a testament to heritage, dedication, and the promise of a thriving future.
