PEWSEY VALE VINEYARD
10 YEAR RELEASE THE CONTOURS RIESLING 2013

"When I first moved to the Barossa, I always used to take a wrong turn when I took the 'shortcut' from the valley floor to my home in Eden Valley. My journey always started to go pear-shaped not long after the beautiful Pewsey Vale vineyard. I've done a bit of swearing up in those hills, and I swear that these Contours museum releases are some of my favourite rieslings. Light straw in the glass with mesmerising aromas of dried hay, Bickford's lime cordial, almond blossom, freshly baked brioche, cultured butter, crushed quartz, pecans and the lightest whiff of marzipan. It takes off on the palate endlessly complex, super long and sustained with a porcelain acidity providing focus and cadence. I swear there is also a note that reminds me of my father's workshop, where he seasoned wood when I was a kid. I've always planned on writing an article on the 'neurochemistry of nostalgia' about such memories. I must do that. Thanks for the reminder Contours, you beautiful little wine. An absolute belter of a museum release."

PEWSEY VALE VINEYARD
1961 BLOCK RIESLING 2022

"With vines planted between 1961 and 2010 at close to 500m elevation in the Eden Valley, Pewsey Vale is a pretty special place. It always seems to be a site that can coax the very best out of the riesling grape. Pristine characters of freshly squeezed lime and lemon fruits with a blast of crunchy green apple and hints of crushed quartz, Christmas lily and lighter wafts of marzipan and petrichor. Detailed and precise, the fruit rides on rails of minerally acidity, setting a cracking pace across the palate before finishing pure and true. Great stuff."

PEWSEY VALE VINEYARD
LIGHTER RIESLING 2022

"It's a smart move, releasing a lighter style, low alcohol riesling. There's certainly a market for such a wine. It teeters just on the off-dry side of the RS ridgeline, showing bright characters of lemon, peach and grapefruit along with some green apple tones and hints of makrut lime, stone and citrus zest. Nice tangy grapefruit acidity on the finish, too, which is clean and moreish"

JANSZ TASMANIA
PONTOS HILLS VINTAGE CUVÉE 2018

"The second release of a wine celebrating the opening of the Pontos Hills Winery and Vineyard in the Coal River Valley. A blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, three years on lees. Pale straw with a fine, lively bead and mousse and aromas of preserved lemon, baked apple, fresh biscuits, brioche, roasting hazelnuts, lightly spiced poached pears, nougat and white flowers. A tweak of pithy grapefruit phenolics on the finish and a crisp, fine line of natural acidity sets a cracking cadence. Lovely drinking."

DALRYMPLE VINEYARDS
SINGLE SITE SWANSEA PINOT NOIR 2021

“A single-site pinot noir from Swansea on Tasmania's East Coast from winemaker Peter Caldwell. Perhaps not as nervy as his Pipers River wines, but the Swansea vineyard delivers a sense of clarity and detail in its form with pristine red cherry and redcurrant fruits, hints of fine spice, Chinese roast duck, shiitake broth, a light wash of amaro herbs and purple floral notes. Very pretty on the nose, perhaps blossom mixed with some iodine-like coastal influence, finishing complex, gamey and long.”

SINGLE SITE PIPERS RIVER CHARDONNAY 2021

“Single-site chardonnay from Pipers River. Great velocity and detail with this release: pure stone and citrus fruits are taut and focused on a canvas of crystalline acidity and stone. Underlying tones of soft spice, oatmeal, white flowers, lemon sherbet and nougat with a sizzling mineral focus and great precision on the sustained finish.”

DALRYMPLE VINEYARDS
ESTATE CAVE BLOCK CHARDONNAY 2020

“The cool climes of Pipers River provide a vivid scaffolding of acidity here, the ripe stone and citrus fruit characters stretched taut like a canvas across its frame. Hints of clotted cream, lemon curd, vanillin oak, dried honey, fig and white flowers in the mix, too. It's an expansive wine yet acidity hauls those rich tones back into line, notes of oatmeal and toast appearing as the wine fades off with a persistent finish.”

MESH
EDEN VALLEY CLASSIC RELEASE RIESLING 2017

"It seems to happen less often these days, but I salute the producers that hold back wines for these 'classic releases', thereby giving wine lovers a chance to enjoy well-cellared wines coming into their drinking sweet spot. We wine hacks constantly harp on about riesling being undervalued, but when you try a wine like this you'll get it. Lime, green apple and grapefruit with underlying soft spice, wildflowers, stone and dried hay. Calm yet still with mineral focus, clarity and velocity, stunning length of flavour and toasty, limey complexity. Very nice indeed."

Dave Brookes,
Halliday Wine Companion 2024.

MESH
EDEN VALLEY RIESLING 2022

"The product of a meeting of two riesling minds, Robert Hill-Smith of Yalumba and Clare Valley legend Jeffrey Grosset. Pale straw with aromas of freshly squeezed lime, juicy white peach and green apple with hints of Christmas lily, orange blossom, wet river stones and grapefruit pith. Tight focussed and pithy in texture with a wonderful line of vivid porcelain acidity and some serious velocity of the focused exit."

CABERNET SAUVIGNON MERLOT 2021

“69/31% cabernet/merlot. Both the flavours and the fragrances rush up to greet you. Blackcurrant, eucalyptus, smoked tobacco, blueberry and black licorice, with cedar oak in support. There's a clear sweetness to the profile here, and softness, but then there are savoury/herbal notes as a counterpoint. It drinks easily and well.”

Halliday Wine Companion 2024.

PINOT GRIGIO 2022

“The flavour profile is all pear, preserved lemon, grapefruit and apple blossom, attractive in itself, but it's the intensity that makes you take notice. This is fruity, floral and satisfying to drink.”
