The Details

Tasting Note Pale gold with slight green-gold tints. Complex aromas of yellow citrus, cut apple, stone fruit and fresh fig with notes of struck flint, brioche and a hint of spicy French oak. Flavours of fresh peach, citrus zest, green mango and roasted hazelnuts are underpinned by a fine creamy texture and flinty bottle complexity. The Heggies minerality which is such a feature of this vineyard leads the wine to an elegant, lingering finish.
Best Enjoyed With Enjoy with pan seared scallops with pea puree and crispy pancetta or potatoes au gratin.
Treatment Fermented and matured for 11 months in 55% French oak barriques (34% new, balance one year and older) and 45% of the blend was matured in ceramic wine eggs.

Accolades

All up, this is an excellent Chardonnay
Lean and precise, the focus is telling when this Single Block Reserve Chardonnay lined up alongside its siblings. The Estate is more compelling with some richness whereas the detail is more direct here. The scent of Jersey caramel whips up a frenzy early. Lemon juice, white fleshed nectarines and underripe pear, it's ribbed with a Mediterranean tonic-like texture. The fruit is pristine with a lemony drive. Some custard powder adds some creaminess although it sits back letting the fruit do the impressing. A little more detail in the mid-palate would get this another point and I reckon a some bottle age will see it mesh that extra fraction. But now we're just being picky... All up, this is an excellent Chardonnay. Drink to five years+

A lovely wine for its delicacy and refinement
Bright light yellow hue with a subtly smoky reductive/smoky-barrel bouquet, lemony fruit underneath; the palate is soft and quite light, almost slightly under-powered it seemed at first, possibly just low-alcohol, the finish persisting well though, with lovely line and purity. The smoky note doesn't re-appear on the palate. Lemon juice and pith flavours linger. A lovely wine for its delicacy and refinement.

Lipsmacking acidity
Pale straw with the merest flash of green in the glass. Notes of juicy white peach and nectarine with a splash of grapefruit lift. Hints of cinnamon, nougat, white flowers, stone, struck flint, apple pastries and nicely judged French oak. Detailed and long with excellent clarity, sapid, lipsmacking acidity and pure, lightly oak-spiced stone and citrus fruits on the long, crystalline finish.

A very good and tight release
The flagship of the the Heggies range. Fruit from a single block on the high elevation Heggies Vineyard (the 30 year old Block “i”). Made from Bernard Clones 76, 95 and 96. Fermented and matured for 11 months. 55% in French oak barriques (34% new, the rest one year and older) and 45% matured in ceramic wine eggs. Wild ferment and vegan friendly. Crafted by Marc Van Halderen. Pale yellow/lemon with a green highlight in colour. Flint strike and apple with fragrant white blossom, radish, white peach, lemon rind, oak spice, fresh white sliced breadcrust and brioche. Driving and tight, with light, almost delicate fruit flavour yet with retained intensity and push. Lingering oak spice doesn’t dominate but gives a pleasant afterthought once the fruit length eventually fades. A very good and tight release.
